Maryland has filed a $157 million counterclaim against the Atlantic Coast Conference in which it alleges that ACC schools tried to recruit two Big Ten universities to join the ACC. Maryland, which leaves the ACC in July, is seeking $157 million in damages for alleged violations of Maryland antitrust laws.

Following his 36th year at the helm of the Washington University athletic department, Athletic Director John Schael will retire. Since his arrival, the Bears have won 19 national championships, 162 University Athletic Association titles and 5,582 total games, good for a 70.4 percent winning percentage. Wow! Impressive!

Scott Carter, an assistant athletic director for development at Tennessee, is returning to his alma mater. Carter has been named senior associate athletic director and chief operating officer at East Tennessee State University.
FRESNO PACIFIC UNIVERSITY
Fresno Pacific announced Leslie Schuemann as its new athletic director Monday, staying in-house to name the next person in charge of completing the transition to the NCAA Division II level. Schuemann, the first female athletic director in school history, replaces Fresno Athletic Hall of Famer Dennis Janzen. Schuemann has been senior associate athletic director since July 2012.

O’Brien was named senior associate athletics director overseeing the Gopher football program and athletics facilities. O’Brien is moving into the slot vacated by David Benedict, who left for Auburn.

Julio Freire was officially introduced today as the 12th athletic director in UT Martin history.
Phil Dane announced his retirement as athletic director last fall, and Freire beat three other candidates UTM interviewed for the position. Freire has worked for athletic departments at Ohio University, Tennessee Tech, the University of Arizona and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is an athletic director for the first time.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said today there is a “reasonable chance” the five power conferences in college football will be able to offer athletes the full cost of attendance after being granted autonomy to do so sometime after the upcoming NCAA convention.Later this week in San Diego, more than 1,000 presidents, commissioners, athletic directors and other athletic department officials will discuss the future structure of the NCAA.

Jerry Koloskie, who rose from working with UNLV’s training staff to eventually becoming interim athletic director, resigned last week. He became UNLV’s co-head athletic trainer in 1982, and then took over the entire department the following year. Koloskie eventually rose to senior associate athletic director, a position he held for 11 years before becoming interim athletic director in 2009. He returned to the No. 2 person in the department when Jim Livengood was named athletic director that December.

University of Illinois trustees are considering giving Athletic Director Mike Thomas a raise and a contract extension. Trustee James Montgomery said Thursday that under the proposal Thomas’ base pay would be increased to $554,000 and extended by two years. Thomas was hired in 2011 on a five-year contract with a base salary of $475,000.

Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams told CBSSports.com this afternoon that the school is ready to compete to retain Franklin for 2014 and beyond. “I expect James to be our football coach. McKiernan is one of 12 athletic administrators from all three NCAA Divisions to make up the 2013-14 class of the NCAA Pathway Program. The NCAA Pathway Program services all senior-level athletics administrators at NCAA member institutions who wish to become director of athletics as their next career step.

University of Minnesota Deputy Athletic Director David Benedict is leaving the school to pursue an opportunity at Auburn University. Benedict will take over as the chief operating officer in the athletic department at Auburn. Benedict was hired by the U of M in July 2012 from VCU, where he oversaw the student-athlete welfare and sport supervision.

University of Vermont athletic director, Robert Corran received a $35,000 raise, about 18 percent of his annual salary. His salary will now reside at $235,000. Corran’s previous salary was $199,283. He earned $140,000 a year when he was first hired in 2003, meaning his earnings have increased 68 percent during the past 10 years.
