Steve Patterson’s appointment is subject to approval from the UT System Board of Regents, which is scheduled to meet Nov. 12 and 13. Patterson would begin at The University later this fall. Powers plans to formally introduce Patterson at a news conference on campus this week.

Steve Patterson is the third athletic director to leave ASU for a high-profile job at another school following Kevin White to Notre Dame in 2000 and Gene Smith to Ohio State in 2005.

AD Scoop has learned Lance Carl, former Buffs football player in the mid-1980s, will return to the school for the fourth time in his career as he has been named the associate athletic director for a newly created external role that encompasses business development, community partnerships and as the coordinator for non-game day events.

ASU president Michael Crow says Senior Vice President James Rund will serve as interim athletic director while national search is conducted. Rund currently is ASU Senior Vice President for Educational Outreach and Student Services and has served in other capacities at ASU.

In a plot twist, reports say Arizona State athletic director Steve Patterson will be the next AD at Texas. Patterson interviewed and emerged as the favorite early Tuesday morning and agreed to take the job a few hours later. Official announcement coming this week.
Patterson is a Texas graduate as well as a graduate of the UT Law School. He has been the athletic director at ASU since March 2012. Prior to his current role as Athletics Director, Patterson served as Chief Operating Officer for Sun Devil Athletics and Managing Director of Sun Devil Sports Group.
Patterson recently received a contract extension at ASU taking his annual base salary increased from $365,000 to $450,000. Sports Illustrated reported that Patterson will receive a multiyear deal starting around $1.4 million per year.

This past weekend in Charlottesville, UVA lost in dramatic fashion to Clemson picking up its seventh loss of the season, a seven-touchdown defeat at home before 15,000 empty seats. The unused tickets for the Clemson game alone cost the university more than $700,000 and money is certainly an issue for a department drawing 16 percent of its budget from the state government. Toyota recently signed a one-year deal with IMG College, LLC, establishing a sponsorship between the automaker and the University of Michigan Athletic Department spanning the 2013-14 school year.
