University of Wisconsin athletics director Barry Alvarez will receive the American Heart Association’s Paul “Bear” Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award, the organization announced on Thursday. Alvarez, who coached the Badgers’ football team for 16 seasons and has led UW’s athletics department since 2004, will receive the award at a presentation on Jan. 11, 2017 in Houston. The Bryant Awards, started in 1986, are named for the former Alabama football coach who died of a heart attack in 1983. The event raises money to fund American Heart Association research, advocacy and education programs for the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke. The 30th anniversary event in 2016 raised nearly $1 million. Past recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Brown, Jimmy Johnson, R.C. Slocum and LaVell Edwards. –host.madison.com– Read More
