Sources close to Gamecocks Athletics Director Ray Tanner detailed to College AD that Tanner and his 7-person advisory panel began an early campaign for one coach in particular days following the Ole Ball Coach’s retirement announcement, the coach, Houston’s Tom Herman. Herman is arguably the hottest name in this offseason’s coaching carousel. It will be interesting to see if Tanner being the first suitor can draw Herman to Columbia. Its no mystery Mizzou will make a push for Herman, given current Mizzou AD Mack Rhoades gave Herman his first heading coaching position at Houston.
One item being overlooked by the general media on Herman is his membership in American Mensa, meaning yes, he’s a certified genius. This fact makes Herman a win-win with both a University’s faculty, and athletic department. Of the 11 current vacant head coaching jobs at the FBS level, U.S. News and World Report’s, 23rd academically ranked, University of Southern California would be wise to make a major push for Herman. Hopefully Houston Athletic Director, Hunter Yurachek has his short list prepared, a $3 million a year salary proposal most likely wont be enough to keep Herman in Houston.
