Earlier this week CollegeAD and other select media were able to get a sneak-preview of The National Social Media Initiative in Athletics, Social Media Sports Management (SM2) and The Net Safety Collaborative’s compelling PSA campaign, YOU HAVE THE POWER.
The thought-provoking billboard, digital, print and 60-second commercial spots share emotional details of student-athletes, coaches and athletic directors who have had their lives altered because of social media misuse. The intimate accounts hammer home the reasoning for why social media education is important beyond just student-athletes. Each powerful story is shaped by the narrative, “Because I didn’t know,” and delivers the key message: “YOU HAVE THE POWER.
“Very few people understand the forever impacts that social media can make on their reputations, revenue and futures – or the very civil liberties that can be taken away from them because of social media misuse,” explained Carrie Cecil, SM2 CEO.
The launch of the campaign will coincide with the NACDA and Affiliates Annual Convention, June 9 -17, 2016 in Dallas, Texas where Cecil will be speaking with TCU’s Chris Del Conte at the ONE VOICE session on June 14 at 10: 15 a.m. discussing How to Change the Climate of Social Media in College Athletics.
“Social media is an ongoing issue for all of us in Intercollegiate Athletics that is only going to escalate in the years ahead. NACDA continually strives to identify industry experts to educate our members on topical issues and this year social media is one of our focal points,” stated NACDA Executive Director Bob Vecchione. “We are pleased to announce that Cecil will provide our members with vetted, cutting edge and thought-provoking information during the ONE VOICE session.”
The spots were developed by the in-house creative team at SM2 who also produced the Don’t Be That Guy comedic campaign targeted at NFL players and student-athletes featuring NFL Coach Dave McGinnis. Additionally, the team has produced more than 65 customized athletic social training videos and handles the production and post-production components of SM2’s Social Media Foundational Education programs.
Meghan Hanson, former assistant general counsel for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and National Initiative in Athletics member concluded, “This campaign beautifully illustrates the devastating effects that can be avoided by implementing a foundational social media curriculum.”
