Since taking over as commissioner of the West Coast Conference in March, Gloria Nevarez — the first Latin American woman to ever become a Division I conference commissioner — has prioritized bringing the league’s brand to the national consciousness. Sporting News spoke to Nevarez about her long-term vision for the WCC, her perspective on diversity in college athletics, her role as administrator in a traditionally male-dominated field, and the challenges of men’s basketball nonconference scheduling. “I played in college and loved it, and the game has always given me opportunities in a career where I ordinarily wouldn’t have ever had them, you know?
