It’s the second month of the year and another Weekly Audible. Once again we are rounding up the best of what you had to say this week.
You’ll have to forgive me if this one is a little short, but I have a parade float to catch this morning.
As always, this article and our entire site for that matter, are entirely dependent upon you. Have something you would like to say? Let us know on Twitter at @CollegeAD. Need more than 140 characters? Then hit the “Contact AD” button below.
Let’s start off with something that’s quickly becoming a fixture around these parts.
Reader suggestions
“@collegead adding a graphic of the school logo would really grab people’s attn to these tweets.” – Social Media Strategist, Ingrid Green, @Ingridium
Great suggestion. We always post a photo with our original content, but our AD Scoop tweets have been a little bare bones. Now we’re trying out Twitter cards to provide a more robust preview of the Scoop content. I say try because Twitter has a mind of its own sometimes. But thanks for the free advice.
Let’s not go to the nuclear option that quickly
The NCAA Board of Governors unanimously voted to give Mark Emmert a three year contract extension which didn’t go over so well with some of our readers.
“Not sure which is worse for America: 3 more years of Emmert or the prospects of 4 years of Trump as President.” – Retired NC Supreme Court Justice, Bob Orr, @JudgeBobOrr
While we understand and sympathize with the good judge’s sentiment, we have to say, the comparison is a little extreme. Emmert may not be everyone’s favorite, but the NCAA is still in business, for now. Meanwhile, Trump probably still contends that the USFL was a good idea. #MakeTheNCAAGreatAgain
Value isn’t always easy to quantify.
“When run well, athletic programs can be a boost in so many areas. No better tool to build institutional awareness.” – Director of Athletic Communications at Arkansas Tech & CEO ofStrategic Athletic Consulting, LLC, Paul Smith, @ptsmith109
I could not have said it better myself, but it seems like something that needs to be said more and more lately. Investing in athletics brings with it notoriety, brand recognition, and the kind of school pride that brings alumni and their money back to campus.
“Athletics at small colleges are more important than ever in terms of enhancing enrollment and visibility.” Athletic Director at OCU and NACDA Executive Committee member Jim Abbott, @jimabbott33
It’s a message that rings true for small schools and large programs alike.
“Interesting read. Especially for private Christian schools who use athletics for the primary role of enrollment” – Director of Athletics Communications at Southern Nazarene University, David Noblett, @okiesid
“.@Greg_Byrne great insight here on how athletic facilities positively impact schools. All students can benefit!” – Auburn Track & Field Coach, Scott Richardson, @aucoachscott
Sorry you were left behind
I can’t tell you how many times we get asked why we left MY STATE U out of an article.
“#Mizzou is not mentioned in this article and I wonder if it was even considered. But yeah, SEC Baseball is huge.” – KTGR Radio host, Matt Michaels, @KTGRMatt
We promise it’s never done with malice. Each story is delivered to the best of our abilities with every significant detail noted. But, to be noted you have to do something noteworthy. Sorry, Mizzou.
Kids will always keep you grounded
Every time we announce a new hire or promotion or raise, our timeline is flooded with congratulatory messages, but the ones from family are always the best. Isn’t that right, Bubba Cunningham?
“Yay for dad! @M_Cunningham15” – Daughter, Caroline Harrell, @caroline_5592
“@caroline_5592 haha he’s buying dinner this weekend.” – Son, Matthew Cunningham, @M_Cunningham15
I’m sure he would have paid anyway. Congratulations, everyone, and have a Happy Mardi Gras.
