Welcome to another edition of The Weekly Audible where we round up everything you had to say this week about the content we published. Since this is only our second go at this particular series, I thought I might guide the conversation a bit more.
As always, this article and our entire site for that matter, are entirely dependent upon you. Have something you would like to say? Let us know on Twitter at @CollegeAD. Need more than 140 characters? Then hit the “Contact AD” button below.
Now lets get into it.
We’ll start by owning up to something.
“@collegead @NDSUathletics what a horrible “article”. What were the questions and criticism? Article repeated headline and ended.” – Director of Ticket Operations at Western Carolina University, Michael Lee, @Only1MikeLee
The post Michael was referring to wasn’t exactly an article. It’s a news story aggregated and shared through our site. But Mr. Lee is right. We do need to get better at sharing these and showing there is more to the story.
You guys tend to agree with Jay Williams
When the former Duke star and ESPN analyst said the NCAA amateur system would collapse, we got this sort of response.
“He’s probably right. How will it affect all other sports & change the relationship w higher ed? Stay tuned!” – Pac-12 Networks Gymnastics Analyst, Greg Marsden, @Pac12Marz
Coaches and people involved with non-revenue sports seem to be the most concerned, as they should be. Stay tuned, indeed.
As news leaked that UCONN AD Warde Manuel would be leaving for the same job at Michigan, reportedly a 5-year deal worth $700,00 annually, people from various walks of life had their own thoughts on the subject.
“This is an absolute home run hire if true.” – CEO of Strategic Athletic Consulting, Paul Smith, @ptsmith109
“@collegead so many changes @NCAA member schools these days. stripes on the field last longer than the Coaches n Directors @coach_ad @Nike” – PTPer.com Human Performance Advisor, Todd Cutrie, @TitletownFights
“@collegead that seems a tad low for the Michigan AD?” – @otownvoice
Actually, no, anonymous internet person. That kind of money would put Manuel firmly in the top 20 highest paid ADs in the country, right where Michigan wants to be, with plenty of room for Manuel to grow.
But what about the program he left behind at UCONN?
“@collegead Deputy AD Paul McCarthy would be excellent candidate. @UConnHuskies @suffolklaw” – Managing Director at Harrison Kent Advisors, Mark Wilson, @wilsonhka
Reactions to FSU settling with Jameis Winston’s accuser were…mixed
Well, maybe not mixed. But reactions to the $950,000 settlement certainly weren’t positive.
“Payouts > policy. Still not enough retribution. His statements were self incriminating at the time.” – GSU Athletics Development Intern, Eric S. Taylor Jr., @erictaylor_jr
“@collegead so this is how much a National Championship cost!!” Jim from Arkansas, @double2eagle
At the end of the day, a settlement isn’t really a satisfying conclusion, but these situations never have happy endings.
“Well then, uh-hum, I guess that settles it…. ” – Former National College Football/Basketball Columnist for Los Angeles Times, Chris Dufresne, @DufRankman
It seems like people are getting frustrated
It’s hard to know how the NCAA will react to issues. Sometimes they move quickly, sometimes glacial. But the issue of time demands on student-athletes and the overwhelming lack of effort on the NCAA’s part seems to stick in the craw of many.
“The @NCAA once again ignores what the athletes themselves are saying… #sportsbiz #sportslaw @CAPA” – Director of Baseball & Marketing at WTH Sportsplex, Ron Barry, @ronbarry21
The overarching argument for most is that the student-athletes are asking for this, mostly so they can focus more on the student part. It’s a comlicated issue, but one we feel like Karen Gross approaches well in part two of our series on the subject.
If you have any feedback for us on this article or anything else posted on College AD, tweet or email us. We’ll be happy to sit down, pour some tea and have a conversation.
