College AD was accurately able to narrow down the Virginia Tech AD search to two candidates, an entire 48 hours prior to Babcock’s departure to Blacksburg. Furthermore, we confirmed that Babcock would become Virginia Tech’s next Athletic Director, hours before major news sources got wind of the announcement.

Virginia Tech AD Search Time Line

    • November 12th, 2013—Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver has decided to resign effective Dec. 31 because of health concerns. He originally planned to retire when his contract expired on Dec. 31, 2015. Longtime associate athletic director Sharon McCloskey will take over as Virginia Tech’s athletic director on an interim basis.

    • November 19th, 2013—12-person search committee is announced to find Virginia Tech’s next Athletic Director. Committee Members
    • December 2nd, 2013—Todd Turner a former athletic director in the ACC, SEC, PAC-12 and Big East will assist Virginia Tech in its search for retiring AD Jim Weaver’s successor TeelTime.
    • December 5th, 2013—Two names have been circulating for the AD position at Virginia Tech, James Madison athletic director Jeff Bourne and the Hokies’ associate athletic director for football operations, John Ballein. We’ll keep you posted.
    • January 16th, 2014—A Source close to the athletic department says the AD search committee wants to get down to three candidates and the University looks to complete the hire by the end of the month or early February. We’ll keep you posted on the latest!
    • January 21st, 2014—Rumor has it there are six people in play for the AD position, UConn AD Warde Manuel, along with Chris Plonsky Texas Women’s Director of Athletics, Michael Kelly Chief Operating Officer at College Football Playoff, Whit Babcock University of Cincinnati AD, Jeff Bourne JMU AD, and John Ballein, Associate AD at Virginia Tech.
    • January 22nd, 2014—UConn AD Warde Manuel officially announces he is not a candidate for the Virginia Tech AD job: “I am not a candidate, have not been interviewed nor have I been contacted by Virginia Tech about its Director of Athletics position despite some recent media reports. I am very happy as the Director of Athletics at UConn and look forward to continuing to work with President [Susan] Herbst, my coaches, staff, student-athletes, donors and fans to enjoy a high level of continued success in athletics at UConn. I wish Virginia Tech all the best in their search to replace, one of the legends in our business, Jim Weaver.”
    • January 22nd, 2014—University of Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague openly denied Wednesday that he is a candidate for the same position at Virginia Tech. “I never was a candidate for Virginia Tech. I truly love it here,” Teague said in a statement released by the university after the Gophers basketball team upset No. 9 Wisconsin 81-68 at Williams Arena.
    • January 22nd, 2014—One of our sources from around the Athletic Department places Whit Babcock, University of Cincinnati AD and Chris Plonsky Texas Women’s Director of Athletics as the Hokies top two candidates right now.
    • January 23rd, 2014—Yesterday came out and said Arizona State’s Mike Chismar, Sr. Associate AD, Operations & Facilities is a finalist for the Virginia Tech AD job. However, a source close to the ASU athletic department has told us, “don’t expect Mike to be going anywhere anytime soon.” Chismar has been at ASU for 33 years and his father coached at ASU before him.
    • January 23rd, 2014John Ballein interviewed with the search committee last week. The interview lasted 75 minutes, Ballein said, during which he evaluated the department’s performance academically, competitively, financially and in personal development of athletes. Among other topics, Ballein addressed the need to grow the Hokie Club. Tech relies solely on Hokie Club donations to fund scholarships while using department and ACC revenues to finance operating budgets. Within a day of his interview, Ballein learned from Todd Turner, who heads the search firm retained by Tech, that he would not be among the finalists.
    • January 23rd, 2014—A Source close to the JMU athletic department tells College AD, an unnamed JMU coach approached Athletic Director Jeff Bourne yesterday inquiring about the Virginia Tech AD spot. Bourne went on to say he took his name out of the running for the job, and that’s he’s staying at JMU.
    • January 24th, 2014—Last Night a source told College AD Chris Plonsky Texas Women’s Director of Athletics is not a candidate for the AD Job. Additionally, a source close to the Cincinnati Athletic department said he/she could not comment on Whit Babcok to Virginia Tech. Looks like Babcok is the frontrunner to become Virginia Tech’s next Athletic Director.
    • January 24th, 2014—Sources have confirmed that Cincinnati director of athletics Whit Babcock will be named to the same position at Virginia Tech. An announcement on Babcock is expected Monday.
