On UT President Sharon Gaber’s quest to grow the university’s enrollment and its profile in the process, she wants the department of athletics to play a special role. Gaber believes athletics can play the same role in attracting students to UT. She is a subscriber to the theory that athletics is the “front porch” of a university, and right now there are more eyes than normal eyeing the property. “What it does is drives interest in attending,” Gaber said. “Students who want to be at a school with strong athletics are also looking for strong academics.
