On Nov. 22, Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter said he felt the football program was heading in the right direction and described Matt Luke as the school’s coach of the present and future. Nine days later, Carter fired Luke. Carter explained that he no longer believes Luke did enough to retain the job, despite the positives he had seen in recruiting and academics. “We tried to look at the totality of the program,” Carter said. Beyond the apathy, Carter also addressed the importance of Luke’s win-loss record in this decision. “Winning is important,” Carter said. “We know that we can win at Ole Miss and compete for championships. -Nick Suss, Mississippi Clarion Ledger.
