After years of planning, the City of Coralville hosted the ceremonial groundbreaking for its $190 million arena project. Donning hard hats and carrying shovels, representatives from Coralville, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, the University of Iowa — including Herky the Hawk and Athletics Director Gary Barta — and more dug in Wednesday at the future site of the Iowa Arena. The 10 speakers who addressed the crowd of over 100 people shared a similar message: that reaching this moment was a community effort and that the facility will be for everyone in the area. Iowa City/Coralville Area Visitors Bureau President Josh Schamberger emceed the event, introducing some of the key players in making the arena possible: retiring Iowa state Sen.
