The UNC athletic department took control of one aspect of the process last week, self-imposing sanctions with hopes the NCAA will accept their actions, which include a postseason ban for this season, a financial penalty of $5,000 plus two percent of the team’s overall budget. Also, the UNC administration imposed the loss of three men’s basketball scholarships for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons and reductions in the number of recruiting visits to campus along with prohibition periods dealing with recruiting. UNC athletic director Darren Dunn didn’t allow players to respond to the situation. Upon learning of the alleged infractions, then-coach B.J. Hill and his staff were immediately fired and within one month, Linder was hired. Linder said the situation is manageable but will still take some strategic maneuvering in the next two seasons should the NCAA accept UNC’s plan. Linder has never wavered on his choice to accept the UNC position, knowing of the impending NCAA investigation. -Samuel G. Mustari, Greeley Tribune. Read More.
