The Head of Athletics and the Board of Regents at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa debated Wednesday whether evaluations of the university’s athletics program have “overemphasized” the department’s yearly fiscal shortfalls. UH Athletics Director David Matlin, along with multiple regents present at Wednesday’s meeting of the board’s Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, argued that the board should take an approach to evaluating the department that includes factors other than the budget shortfall into account.
