Division 1 athletic directors have to have a firm understanding of their school, its students, the athletes, coaches, donors and alumni. But at the University of Delaware, the athletic director must also understand the people who reside up and down the First State (i.e. above and below the canal) because they are the fan base of the UD athletic teams. The previous two UD athletic directors were outsiders with impressive backgrounds but stayed at UD just three years each.
