The UCF athletic department pitched Space Coast tourism officials on an unusual football-related marketing idea.

The university is unveiling a new seating section in 2015, with the “Only-in-Florida” twist: The new area will have a tiki-hut theme.

UCF has offered the Space Coast Office of Tourism naming rights to the new section in return for $2 million, spread over 10 years.

The new “UCF beach club” section of Bright House Networks Stadium could have a name promoting the Space Coast as Orlando’s beach, for example, The name would be seen during televised broadcasts of UCF football games, as well as by fans within the stadium, during months when local tourism is relatively weak. It also could lead to other tourism marketing efforts of the Space Coast aimed at UCF students, staff and alumni.
The Space Coast is a region in Florida around Kennedy Space Center, where NASA launched Space Shuttles until the last one on July 8, 2011 at 11:29 a.m. Cities in the area include Titusville, Cocoa, Rockledge, Cape Canaveral, Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Indialantic, and Palm Bay. Most of the area lies within Brevard County.

It is bounded on the south by the Treasure Coast. It is bounded on the west and north by Central Florida and is economically tied to that region. It is bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean.

UCF Assistant Athletic Director Mike O’Donnell told Brevard County Tourist Development Council members that the $200,000-a-year commitment would benefit both the university and the Space Coast tourism industry.

“We have a unique opportunity. There is nothing like this in the entire country,” O’Donnell said, envisioning a decor of palm trees and cabanas in the newly designed section of the stadium that will promote the “Florida lifestyle.”
