The first time UC San Diego men’s basketball coach Eric Olen got a look at the massive new video board — 50 feet wide by 15 feet deep — in renovated RIMAC Arena on campus, he was as giddy as a guy who quadrupled the size of the TV in his living room. It is part of the renovation of 23-year-old RIMAC that is the most extensive facility work done thus far as UCSD moves toward NCAA Division I status in the fall of 2020. The first official Tritons basketball game will be played there at 7:30 p.m. Friday when the men open the season against Simon Fraser in the CCAA/GNAC Challenge.
