A San Jose State University scholarship fund redirected donations to pay its sports coaches and staff, according to a report published Wednesday by the school’s student newspaper. More than $6.3 million intended for sports scholarships was mishandled under the tenure of former athletics director Gene Bleymaier, The Spartan Daily reported. Donation checks sent to the university in recent years for The Spartan Foundation were instead directed to the athletics office, sources told The Spartan Daily. Athletics staff allegedly took donations and transferred approximately 96% of the money to “current accounts that paid for car allowances and bonuses to coaches and athletics administration staff.” -Gwendolyn Wu, San Francisco Chronicle.
