EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

The new American Athletic Conference television deal with ESPN that goes into effect in the fall semester of 2020 will certainly give a boost to East Carolina from a financial perspective in the long run, but it will also provide fairly significant challenges up front. The new contract with ESPN, which will run from the 2020-21 academic year through 2031-32, comes out to $83.3 million per year for the conference, which will pay each team around $7 million annually. That’s a significant raise over the estimated $2 million handed out to each school with the prior TV deal. But, as part of the new deal, each school will now be required to handle a number of television broadcast productions on their own on ESPN3 and the new ESPN+ subscription channel, which means conference schools like ECU have to shell out significant money to put together control rooms, broadcast teams, production crews and more. East Carolina athletics director Jon Gilbert said each broadcast will cost the athletic department around $6,500-$7,500 to hire announcers and a production crew. Multiplied by 45, that’s more than $300,000 annually spent on broadcasting games that wasn’t on the books previously. – Stephen Igoe, Hoist the Colours, Read More
