Not even a week onto the job, John Engler is making his presence felt as Michigan State’s interim president. Engler appointed Bill Beekman as the university’s interim athletic director, according to a news release issued Monday, and MSU will not hire a permanent athletic director from within the school’s athletic department. That is a change of direction from what two university sources told the Free Press last week shortly before the MSU Board of Trustees appointed Engler to his position. Beekman has no experience in athletic management. Engler said a nationwide search will begin shortly for a permanent athletic director and that no internal candidates will be considered in the search process. “Just as the Board of Trustees had confidence in Bill to keep things moving as acting president, I have confidence that he will provide very capable leadership of the athletic department during this time of transition,” Engler said in a release.
