From where I was sitting, in a crowd full of university officials and media members on that March morning, it was obvious a change was coming to Lamar athletics for better or worse. After all, Born had a much different background than his predecessor. Coming from Louisiana Tech, Born was touted as something of a fundraising guru, known for his promoting prowess and aggressive tactics in facility renovations. Conversely, Henderson’s experience was in NCAA compliance. He had worked in Lamar’s compliance department for five years before taking over the athletic director job full time in 2012. Has Born awoken Lamar’s sleeping giant? He’d probably tell you not just yet. But a little more than a year into his tenure as the university’s athletic director, Born’s skill set is paying dividends, and Lamar’s athletic department is moving in the right direction. -Matt Faye, beaumontenterprise.
