Championships and trophies are the goals in collegiate sports. But for the Athletic Director at Gulf Coast State College, the priority starts in the classroom for the student-athlete. Since taking over as Athletic Director at GCSC in the mid 1990’s, Gregg Wolfe’s philosophy has been ‘academics first, athletics second.’ Twenty years later, he’s got the numbers to prove it. GCS graduation rate this past year was 78 percent graduation rate of its sophomores. That means eight out of 10 are receiving the Associate of Arts degree and moving on with an 80 percent transfer rate to universities. Wolfe says he believes the students can be competitive and win championships at the same time.
