Florida State athletic director David Coburn first interviewed Mike Norvell in early November, in the days after Willie Taggart was fired. It was Coburn’s first interview of what proved to be an intensive vetting process, but the Memphis coach immediately won Coburn and president John Thrasher over. “Well, I think by the end of our first interview the president and I were very interested,” Coburn said. Coburn leaned on the advice of Sugiyama and search firm DHR International as he sifted through his first search for a football coach as an athletic director.
