Auburn University president Steven Leath is standing by the coach he signed to a seven-year, $49 million contract less than one year ago. Leath echoed Auburn athletics director Allen Greene’s comments from last week, throwing his weight behind Gus Malzahn for the remainder of the season and 2019 in the midst of a disappointing year that has resulted in the Tigers dropping out of the rankings after rising as high as No. 7 nationally. “Well, I hired what I think is a first-class athletic director in Allen Greene,” Leath told Auburn Undercover on Tuesday. “He’s doing a first-class job, so I stand with Allen — and Allen I think was pretty clear with his comments about Gus being here next year. So, I don’t really have anything to add to that specifically.” Asked whether Leath wants Malzahn to be the coach in 2019, the president responded swiftly: “Yep.” Leath was one of the primary men in the room during Malzahn’s contract negotiations following the Tigers’ advancement to the SEC Championship in December 2017. – BRANDON MARCELLO, auburn.247sports – Read More
