The Big Ten office issued a public reprimand of Patrick Chambers for violating the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy following Penn State’s game against Maryland on Saturday. In addition, the conference announced that the institution has been fined $10,000 as a result of the violation. -Brent Yarina, Penn State athletic director, Sandy Barbour still supports the head coach, publicly declaring, “Patrick Chambers is my guy.”


Interim athletic director Jim Hackett is seeking Regents authorization to issue bids and construction contracts to move forward with the Athletics South Competition and Performance project that is part of the Stephen Ross Athletic Campus. Athletic department resources and gifts, including a $100 million naming gift from Ross, will fund the $168 million project. Vivian Fuller has been reassigned to associate vice provost for student affairs. Fuller’s reassignment comes seven months after she received a contract extension as athletic director. Her new deal was set to run up to July 2017 and paid $210,000 annually (a 40 percent raise). Robert Walker will serve as interim athletic director effective March 1. -Ros Dumlao, The Clarion-Ledger-

Effective June 30th, Athletic Director Jerry Schmutte will be stepping down. Since arriving in 2012, Schmutte recruited and hired new head coaches. Additionally, he oversaw key internal changes to the Athletic Department including the addition of a full-time strength coach – a first in the GPAC and a full-time sports information director. The search process for a new AD will begin when everyone returns to campus for the start of the spring semester on January 28th.


Ball State has found a new athletics director. President Paul Ferguson will introduce the new athletic director at a news conference tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Worthen Arena Lounge. It will also be streamed live on the Ball State website. Deputy athletic director Brian Hardin has served as the university’s interim athletic director since former director Bill Scholl left for Marquette University in mid-October. Sources tell College AD that Lehigh Carbon Community College athletic director Jocelyn Beck resigned her position, effective immediately. Marge Beahm has been named interim AD. Beahm had been the school’s head women’s basketball coach for six seasons before resigning in May. We will keep you updated as you hear more.

SIU’s next permanent athletic director will inherit solid coaches and some of the best facilities in the country, but could face big financial challenges. Mario Moccia, the Salukis’ outgoing athletic director, said his permanent successor will likely need to continue what he has started to battle those challenges. Dr. Harold Bardo, the new interim athletic director, is scheduled to take over Jan. 1st. President Randy Dunn said he prefers not to use a search firm to hire Moccia’s permanent replacement, but will leave it up to the SIU Board of Trustees. -Todd Hefferman, The Southern-
