WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY

Willamette University has selected Valerie Cleary to serve as its next director of athletics. Cleary has worked as the senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Portland State University since September of 2013 and was PSU’s interim athletics director for several months. She will begin working at Willamette in late April. Willamette selected Cleary through a broad and extensive search process.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY

Bill Peterson will retire at the end of the spring 2015 semester. Senior Associate Athletic Director Matt Green will assume interim athletic director duties effective immediately, and Peterson will continue to serve in an advisory capacity through the end of the semester.

ST. BONAVENTURE UNIVERSITY

Recently-selected St. Bonaventure University Athletic Director Tim Kenney is eager to begin working with student athletes who impressed him from the start. He credits these student athletes for convincing him to make the easy decision of choosing St. Bonaventure. UMASS

Georgia Tech associate athletic director Ryan Bamford will become the seventh permanent athletic director at UMass. An announcement is expected Monday with a press conference likely on Tuesday. Bamford has New England roots. He grew up in New Hampshire where his father, Steve, was the athletic director at Plymouth State and a high school principal. MCLA

Laura Mooney has been named the Director of Athletics at MCLA. Mooney contributed to the Maritime Department of Athletics in a variety of roles, as she provides the administrative oversight of the department’s financial operation; serves as the designated Senior Woman Administrator; is the liaison with human resource and supervises several sport programs as well as the sports medicine department. Mooney arrives at MCLA after serving as Associate Athletic Director for Administration/Senior Woman Administrator at SUNY Maritime College.

ROBERTS WESLEYAN COLLEGE

Last week sources told College AD, Bob Segave would become the next athletic director, and today, Bob Segave has been named Roberts Wesleyan’s next athletic director, effective July 1, 2015. He succeeds Mike Faro, who will be retiring at the end of June, after serving as the College’s athletic director since 1992 and with Roberts Wesleyan since 1983.

ANDERSON UNIVERSITY

Anderson University athletics experience rapid growth and tremendous success under her watch, director of athletics Nancy Simpson is leaving her post effective May 15. Bill Peterson is stepping down as Shorter University Director of Athletics, the university announced today. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI

University of Missouri Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin announced today, during an informal media session, that newly hired athletic director Mack Rhoades will officially start no later than April 27th.  Mike Alden will remain inside the athletic department until the end of August.

UW-LA CROSSE

Kim Blum has been named director of athletics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Blum had served as the university’s interim director of athletics since July 2014. “I will never take for granted what an incredible honor has been bestowed upon me,” added Blum. “I recognize what a truly extraordinary privilege it is to become the next UW-La Crosse Director of Athletics.” Last week, College AD heard from two separate sources that Blum was the heavy favorite for the position.

MSU DENVER

MSU Denver will interview four candidates for the position of athletics director beginning this week, including one internal candidate. On March 19, Debbie Hendricks (PDF 822 KB), MSU Denver’s head women’s volleyball coach since 2000, Kurt Esser (PDF 158 KB), senior associate athletics director at the University of New Mexico,Dena Freeman-Patton (PDF 190 KB) will interview on campus on March 23. Also interviewing on March 23 is Anthony Grant (PDF 965 KB), who was recently promoted to interim athletic director at Millersville University in Pennsylvania having served as associate athletic director at the university since 2008.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

Daryl Gross is out as Syracuse athletic director, sources said. The school announced his resignation just 12 days after a harsh NCAA public report that led to the vacation of 108 wins, a fine of more than $1 million and significant questions about whether the school prioritizes its athletic department over its academic integrity. Gross’ methods of improving SU’s bottom line frequently frustrated fans of the program, with branding and marketing becoming buzzwords alongside scoring and winning. – By Dave Tobin, The Post-Standard. UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING

Director of Athletics, Tom Burman will earn a total of $37,500 in bonuses from this basketball season. He will take home an additional $10,000 for Wyoming making the NCAA Tournament, plus a bonus of $2,500 for the men’s basketball team finishing in the top four of the Mountain West. Burman also made an additional $25,000 after Wyoming was ranked in the Top 25 of the Associated Press poll earlier this season. -Star Tribune-

UMass is expected to bring four athletic director candidates to campus beginning Friday, former Stony Brook athletic director Jim Fiore. UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII

Sources told College AD last night that the search advisory committee recommended Dave Matlin as the next athletic director of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Matlin, is the executive director of the Hawaii Bowl and the Diamond Head Classic, We were also told that Keith Amemiya has found his way into the mix, through what our sources say has been a “back door” method. Amemiya, is an insurance executive and was seen on campus with Chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman last week. He was not interviewed by the committee. We are told the committee never considered Amemiya because he did not meet their qualifications.

A dissatisfied Texas booster has created a website, FireStevePatterson, presumably in hopes of rallying fellow Longhorns to the cause of ousting the athletics director for whom the site is named. BRADLEY UNIVERSITY

Bradley University has hired Chris Reynolds as its 10th Director of Athletics. Reynolds has served as Deputy Director of Athletics and Recreation, Operations at Northwestern University since 2012 with direct responsibility for the planning and management of Recreation, Equipment Operations, and the Facilities and Event Management units. Prior to Northwestern, Reynolds spent nine years at Indiana holding a variety of senior level positions. Reynolds will be formally introduced to the public at noon Wednesday, March 18.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE UNIVERSITY

Kelli Lindley who guided the Crusader women’s basketball team to five NCAA Division II National Tournament berths and compiled a 202-131 record during 12 seasons as head women’s basketball coach, was introduced by NNU president Dr. David Alexander as the new Director of Athletics yesterday. Lindley stepped down from her position as head women’s basketball coach following the 2012-13 season to become the Crusaders’ Associated Athletic Director and NCAA Compliance Officer.

LEHIGH CARBON COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) announced a new Director of Athletics, Andrew Johnson, yesterday. He brings over six years of experience as the Director of Athletics at Delaware County Community College. College AD first broke the news February 27th.

COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

Joe Parker, the deputy athletic director at Texas Tech for the past four years, is expected to be named CSU’s new athletic director.Several sources with knowledge about the search confirmed Monday that Parker would be hired by Colorado State University. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) recognized Fayetteville State University Athletics Director Dr. Edward McLean as the recipient of the 2013-14 Jeanette E. Lee Award during its annual Spring Meeting. The honor is a special recognition of outstanding service within the CIAA. Along with winning on the courts and fields, McLean is most proud of the student-athletes winning in the classroom as indicated by the average graduation rate during his tenure there of 60%.

UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES

University of the Sciences has named Marc Caserio, EdD, athletic director effective immediately USciences Interim President Marvin Samson announced today. Caserio has been filling the role of interim athletic director since August 2014. University of the Sciences has prepared students to be leaders and practitioners in the healthcare and science fields for nearly 200 years.

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY

George Mason University Director of Athletics Brad Edwards announced today that men’s basketball coach Paul Hewitt will not return to coach the 2015-16 season. Hewitt recently completed his fourth season as the Patriots men’s basketball coach, the second in the nationally recognized Atlantic 10 conference. The Patriots finished this season with a 4-14 conference mark, 9-22 overall, and lost the opening round game against Fordham in the Atlantic 10 Championship for the second straight year. The team finished with an 11-20 overall mark and 4-12 league mark in their inaugural season, 2013-14.

Derek van der Merwe, who has served as Austin Peay State University Athletics Director for the past 1 ½ years, will step down from that post after being named the University’s Vice President for Advancement, Communication and Strategic Initiatives. That announcement was made Friday morning by University President Alisa White. van Der Merwe replaces Dr. Brian Johnson, who left the University in Spring 2014 to become president at Tuskegee University. – Clarksville Online, Read More.
