With Hurricane Florence sitting in the Atlantic Ocean moving slowly towards the East Coast, precautions and evacuations are taking place all along the Carolina coast. The category 4 storm, which is expected to be the largest hurricane to make landfall in the Carolina’s is expected to reach shore sometime Friday. The storm has already forced several universities to close, with others keeping a close eye on Florence. As expected Hurriance Florence has also caused a number of cancellations to scheduled athletic events or caused others to be moved.
Schedule Changes
Coastal Carolina – Campbell
Week three of the college football season will get underway Wednesday afternoon. CCU was scheduled to face Campbell Saturday at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina but because of Florence’s pending arrival the Chanticleers and Camels have moved the game to Campbell’s Barker-Lane Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. eastern, attendance is free and the game can be seen on ESPN3.
Boston College -Wake Forest
BC and Wake Forest were set to open ACC play Thursday night in primetime on ESPN. The two teams will still play Thursday in Winston-Salem at BB&T Field but kickoff has been moved up to 5:30 p.m. eastern. The World Wide Leader will still carry the contest.
Virginia – Ohio
Week 3 was supposed to be a home game for Virginia, but Hurricane Florence has forced the Cavaliers to relocate Saturday’s matchup with Ohio to Nashville. The two will now play in Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. eastern. Vanderbilt will face Notre Dame on Saturday in South Bend allowing the Bobcats and Cavaliers to use the Commodores home field.
Charlotte – Old Dominion
The Conference USA foes were scheduled to face-off Saturday at Charlotte’s Richardson Stadium. With the pending arrival of Hurricane Florence the 49ers and Monarchs will now meet on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. eastern. ODU traveled to Charlotte on Tuesday because of manditory evaction orders that are in place for the Norfolk, Va area.
Cancelations / Postponements
College of Charleston
The College of Charleston announced Monday that the university would cancel all home events scheduled for this week.
Duke
The Blue Devils have also canceled all home events that were scheduled for the week. The Duke football team still plans to travel to face Baylor in Waco on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. eastern.
The Citadel – Charleston Southern
Saturday’s scheduled football contest between Charleton Southern and The Citadel has been postponed until November 29, contingent on neither team qualifying for the FCS playoffs.
UCF – North Carolina
The Knights were scheduled to travel to Chapel Hill this weekend to take on the Tar Heels, but Hurricane Florence has forced the school’s to alter scheduled plans. The game has not been officially canceled but a makeup appears unlikely because of each team’s remaining schedule.
ECU – Virginia Tech
ECU informed Virginia Tech that the Pirates would not be traveling to Blacksburg on Saturday to face the Hokies. No word yet on if Virginia Tech and ECU will try to reschedule the game.
Liberty – Norfolk State
Liberty and Norfolk State, originally slated to play this week at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia, have agreed to move the contest to December 1. The game will still take place at Williams Stadium if the Spartans do not qualify for postseason play.
Elizabeth City State – Winston Salem State
Hurricane Florence has forced the cancelation of Elizabeth City State and Winston Salem State‘s scheduled contest as part of the 21st Down East Football Viking Classic. A makeup time has not been announced.
NC State – West Virginia
Saturday’s highly anticipated game between NC State and West Virginia has been postponed. The Wolfpack and Mountaineers have not announced a makeup date.
North Carolina Central – South Carolina State
The MEAC opener between North Central and South Carolina State, scheduled for Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg, SC, has been rescheduled. The two teams will now meet on November 24 in Orangeburg.
Southern Miss – Appalachian State
App State will have to wait another week to open its home schedule following a Wednesday announcement that Saturday’s game against Southern Miss will not take place due to Hurricane Florence’s pending landfall. The two teams are working on rescheduling but it is not clear if App State and Southern Miss will be able to find a date for this season.
South Carolina – Marshall
South Carolina will not host Marshall on Saturday the Gamecocks announced Wednesday afternoon. South Carolina will look to add a 12th game according to a press release.
Furman – Colgate
Furman was scheduled to host Colgate at Paladin Stadium but becuase of Hurricane Florence, the two have decided to cancel Saturday’s game. The contest will not be rescheduled.
