The Washington family, for whom Washington-Grizzly Stadium is named, has once more stepped forward with a major gift to the UM Athletics. The sons of Dennis and Phyllis Washington, Kyle and Kevin, are giving $7 million on behalf of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation to be used for UM’s planned $14 million Washington-Grizzly Champions Center. The 46,000-square-foot facility, to be located against the southwest side of the stadium, will include a new football locker room and a two-level weight room for all 15 of Montana’s men’s and women’s athletic teams. -NBC Montana-

The University of Michigan will hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss athletic director Dave Brandon’s future, multiple sources told the Free Press. The sources – all with first-hand knowledge of plans – said they were not at liberty to disclose what will be announced. Foley Field’s $12 million upgrade will make games a more hospitable scene for fans and likely benefit Georgia’s baseball program beyond the improved aesthetic appeal. The renovations that were approved last February will add an elevator and create wider entrance and exit passageways. According to Assistant AD for Facilities Charles Whittemore, the construction is on schedule and Foley Field will be ready in time for Georgia’s first game in February. -Emily Giambalvo, Red and Black-

The athletic department will have a budget shortfall for the third year in a row due to continuing drops in football ticket sales, athletic director Rick George said. George said he will not seek a loan from the campus to help cover the cost of the shortfall. George will finish the fiscal year June 30, 2015, with a balanced budget by finding ways to bring in additional revenue. The shortfall size is unknown, but it will be considerably smaller than the past two years and likely less than $1 million. -Kyle Ringo, Buff Zone-

Tennessee athletes who represent the school’s three most popular sports — football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball — study 30 different majors, but the most popular choice among the 138 students was “undecided.” Approximately 19 percent of athletes were listed as undecided. IWU reached its highest ever standing yesterday with a No. 5 ranking in the NAIA Men’s Cross Country Coaches’ Top-25 Poll, released yesterday evening by the national office. The Wildcats reached the top-10 in the poll two weeks ago for the first time since the preseason poll in 2008. The Wildcats have never been ranked in the top-five in program history before today’s poll. IWU was improved six spots from last week when they were ranked No. 11.

Director of Athletics Mike Thomas announced Monday the hiring of Brad Wurthman as the Associate Director of Athletics, Marketing and Fan Development. Wurthman joins the Illini staff after a seven-year stop at Cincinnati where he was Associate AD/Marketing and Strategic Communications the last four years. He will be responsible for creating marketing strategies for all of Illinois’ varsity sports, while orchestrating the gameday presentation and fan experience for football and men’s basketball games.

NKU has dismissed Jennifer Hilvert, who was dance team coach and the assistant director of NKU’s recreation department, over the summer for misusing a school procurement card and buying $6,800 in airline tickets for personal use. She was dismissed in June for her “willful violation of policy and dishonesty related to misuse of University resources and department procurement card”. This news comes about 13 months after former athletic director Scott Eaton pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $311,000 from the school using such a procurement card. – James Pilcher, The Enquirer-

Baseball head coach Dan McDonnell announced the promotion of Roger Williams to associate head coach. Williams, who joined Louisville as pitching coach prior to the 2007 season, has established the Cardinals as one of the nation’s top pitching programs during his eight seasons working alongside McDonnell. Prior to joining the Cardinals in 2007, Williams served as an assistant at Georgia during its 2006 College World Series season and worked 11 seasons as an assistant at North Carolina.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY
Athletic director Sean Frazier unveiled the athletics facilities master plan this afternoon. The plan has an estimated cost of $138 million and will be privately funded. Planned improvements include suites, lounges and outdoor club seating on the east side of the stadium, as well as 6,500 seats in the south end zone. The athletic department will identify the next project between now and the spring. Kent State student-athletes continue to succeed in the classroom, according to Graduation Success Rates (GSR) statistics released Tuesday by the NCAA. Thirteen out of 14 Kent State GSR reporting sports either maintained or improved their GSR rate from 2012-13, and the overall student-athlete GSR improved from 74 percent to 78 percent. Also, five Kent State athletic teams (men’s golf, field hockey, women’s golf, women’s soccer and volleyball) boasted a perfect 100 GSR rate.
LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE
LVC and Brain Sentry, a privately held maker and distributor of head-impact sensors, announced plans to partner on a study dealing with the management of sports-related brain injuries. It will focus on LVC’s three helmeted sports—football, ice hockey, and men’s lacrosse, beginning with the latter in the Spring. Brain Sentry sensors will determine the actual number of at risk head impacts compared to current standardized sideline assessment by medical personnel and player self-report.

An NCAA report said the Knights graduate a higher percentage of student-athletes than any other public Division I school in America, higher than Cal, Michigan, Virginia and other academic bastions with brainy reputations. Twelve of UCF’s 14 programs had rates of 90 percent or better. Men’s golf, men’s tennis, rowing, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball had 100 percent graduation rates. For 2017-18, at least 80 percent of all incoming athletes will have the minimum 3.0 GPA in high school that is required of all other students applying to Cal. No more than 20 percent will be admitted through a separate process involving scrutiny by the Director of Admissions and the SAAC. Once an athlete leaves college, the school is not generally required to pay for medical care related to those on-field injuries. This week, the PAC-12 Conference took the first steps to reform this model. In addition to guaranteeing four-year scholarships for athletes and easing transfers between schools, these changes would ensure that the medical expenses for athletes injured during their college playing days would be covered up to four years after they leave school. -The Post and Courier-

COLUMBIA COLLEGE
Columbia College announced yesterday the addition of five more programs. The baseball team will be reinstated for the first time since 1982, and the Cougars will have men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams. The new programs are expected to begin in the fall of 2016, Athletic Director and men’s basketball Coach Bob Burchard said. The university recently became the first Division I athletic department to become a Special Olympics College. Anthony Del Prete ’04 has been named Head Baseball Coach at Suffolk University for the 2015 season. Del Prete will also serve as the department’s Associate Athletics Director. He replaces Cary McConnell, who relinquished the role as he was named Athletics Director. He becomes just the sixth baseball coach in the program’s sixty eight year history. Del Prete has served as an assistant coach at Suffolk for the past 10 seasons. Since 2008, he has served as Sports Information Director.

MSU Athletics has announced that Brittany Heinz has been named Director of Marketing & Special Events. Heinz brings a wealth of professional experience to Maverick Athletics. She previously worked at Inver Hills Community College as Student Life Coordinator and Assistant Director of Recreational Sports. After graduating in 2006 from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in Finance, Heinz received a master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2008.
WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE
The NJCAA confirmed today it has launched its own investigation into potential eligibility rules violations in Westchester Community College’s athletic programs going back three to five years. The NJCAA is “investigating the athletes in question” and all other sports programs at WCC. The school confirmed earlier this week that it is reviewing the transcripts and academic eligibility of all of its athletes over the last three to five years. Chatham University has announced the addition of Timothy Banner as the program’s first head baseball coach. Banner brings over 26 years of coaching experience to his new position. The Cougars will take the field in the spring of 2016. Prior to joining the Cougars, Coach Banner was the head coach at Woodland Hills High School from 2007-2013. Coach Banner was also the head coach at North Allegheny High School from 1999-2006. During his time there the Tiger’s made the AAAA playoffs every year.

Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Burns has hired Kevin McKeown as defensive coordinator and Jay Sothoron as offensive coordinator for the Division I Knights. McKeown arrives at Bellarmine after experiencing tremendous late-season success in 2013 with Siena, where he was hired in August of 2012 as the defensive coordinator. Sothoron previously served as the first assistant and defensive coordinator at Robert Morris University. Last season, Sothoron’s defense finished third in the country in caused turnovers.

A day after the Pac-12 announced it plans to offer four-year scholarships to all student-athletes, instead of year-to-year scholarships, along with other post-career medical and educational benefits, Boise State said Tuesday it plans to provide cost of attendance to all student-athletes. Currently, Boise State offers multi-year scholarships for student-athletes and will expand the practice. Each coach and team will determine how best to use these scholarship contracts. -Dave Southorn-

LSU athletic director Joe Alleva backtracked slightly on a statement about LSU fans possibly storming the field should LSU defeat Alabama on Nov. 8, saying they should celebrate victories “within the seating areas of the stadium, and not on the field.” LSU was fined $5,000 by the SEC when fans flooded onto to the field following the Tigers 10-7 victory against No. 3 Ole Miss under a rule established in 2004. Phil Elmassian, the veteran defensive coordinator who returned to Ferrum College in February after coaching for years at the major college level, has left the Panthers. Elmassian resigned as the defensive coordinator at his alma mater for health reasons, assistant athletic director Gary Holden said yesterday. The university announced Tuesday that football coach Bill Snyder and Athletics Director John Currie will each donate $2,500 to allow the university’s residence halls to re-open early during Thanksgiving weekend. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Kansas on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, the end of the university’s week-long fall break. Snyder’s and Currie’s donations will cover the cost of reopening the residence halls on Friday and Saturday to allow students to return early to campus. -AP-

A legislative Post-Audit report analyzed data compiled by the NCAA, and found that the athletic programs at Marshall University and seven state Division II colleges required significant taxpayer and tuition subsidies in the 2012-13 school year. The Pac-12, in a vote of the presidents and chancellors of the Conference’s 12 member universities, has adopted sweeping reforms for student-athletes, including guaranteed four-year athletic scholarships, continuing education, improved health care, liberalized transfer rules, and more. The changes made follow closely the reform principles the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors outlined in a letter written to their peer conferences in May 2014. Nicole Hager was named the first Director of Academic Support Services for Athletics in a partnership between athletics and the office of undergraduate education. Hager comes from Robert Morris University in Springfield, where she served as professor for eleven years. She has considerable experience with academic programs and retention initiatives related to student-athletes, as well as with honors program teaching and co-curricular activities.

NCAA President Mark Emmert told USA TODAY Sports the next calendar year is a “good time to have a discussion” about whether the current rules related to college athletes and autographs are still proper. “I hope the members do look at it,” Emmert said in a phone interview today. “Whether they change it or not is less important than whether or not they look at it and say, ‘We still think this is a good rule for good reasons’ or not, but we need to have it affirmed or changed — one of the two — and this is a good time to do it.” -Dan Wolken, USA TODAY-

Bethany College announces the hiring of Mike McCormick as assistant softball coach. McCormick comes to Bethany from McPherson College in McPherson, Kan., where he spent 16 years as head softball coach. McCormick was designated head softball coach in spring of 1999, when the college instituted softball as a formal club sport. In 2000, the school established softball as an official intercollegiate sport.
MIAMI UNIVERSITY
The university announced this morning that Ben Roethlisberger, a 2012 graduate and two-time Super Bowl Champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his wife have agreed to donate $1 million towards the Indoor Sports Center. The Indoor Sports Center, expected to be completed in January, will feature a full-length 120 yard playing surface to be called “Ben Roethlisberger Field.” It will positively impact all 19 of Miami’s sports programs and allow teams to train year-round.

Jim and Carole Mounier casually mentioned to Illinois State University Athletic Director Larry Lyons this summer they wanted to increase their financial commitment to the Redbird golf programs. President Larry Dietz announced at the Board of Trustees meeting that the Mouniers are making an eight-figure commitment, the largest individual financial gift in school history, to the athletic program, specifically for golf. One day after the school announced a $10 million donation to the athletic department, MSU announced Eli and Edythe Broad made a “challenge grant” of $25 million to the Eli Broad College of Business.The announcement of the Broads’ gift comes on the same day Michigan State trustees approved a $1.5 billion fundraising goal, to be accomplished by Dec. 31, 2018. The university publicly launched Empower Extraordinary: The Campaign for Michigan State University on Friday, a campaign that has been in its “silent phase” since July 2011. Panini America has announced that they have reached exclusive agreements with three major colleges for use in trading card products. This includes the University of Georgia, the University of Kentucky and the University of Miami. Dr. Angela Totty has been chosen to serve as dean of student services and athletic director at MSU-WP. Totty, who served the past two years as vice president of student success at Three Rivers College, will replace Dr. Herb Lunday, who announced his retirement in June 2014 after a nearly 30-year career with the Missouri State University System and a 21-year tenure with Missouri State-West Plains. The SEC is searching for a new commissioner after Mike Slive announced earlier this month he was retiring. Vanderbilt chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos, who is the current chair of the SEC’s presidents and chancellors, announced Thursday he has selected a five-person committee to conduct the search. Arkansas chancellor Gearhart was named the chairman of the committee. The committee plans to select the next commissioner “in a timely manner” prior to Slive’s retirement on July 31, 2015. The Ohio athletics department has promoted Drake Bolon to Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Sales. Bolon oversees all marketing, ticket sales and advertising efforts for the Bobcats’ 16 varsity sports. Bolon has also been the driving force behind Ohio’s advertising and branding campaigns. Bolon developed ‘Best Fans in the MAC’ and ‘My State. My Team.’ as Ohio’s highly recognizable brands. Bolon joined the department after serving as Marketing and Ticketing Director at Robert Morris University.

Oakland University Credit Union has increased its sponsorship with the Golden Grizzlies, announced Athletics Director Jeff Konya. This becomes the largest sponsorship in OU athletics history. The deal will be $65,000 per year for nine years, bringing the total to $600,000 over a 10-year period. OUCU will have its logo displayed on the O’rena floor as part of this new agreement, as well as signage in all athletic facilities and on the GoldenGrizzlies website.

With NCAA cost-of-attendance legislation on the fast track, the Minnesota is gearing up to offer the extra money to as many of its athletes as will be allowed. “We plan to include every sport,” deputy athletics director Beth Goetz said. The NCAA has a deadline of Dec. 1 to finalize cost-of-attendance legislation. OSU is suing former offensive line coach Joe Wickline for breach of contract after he took a job at Texas in the offseason. Wickline responded with his own lawsuit against Oklahoma State and OSU athletic director Mike Holder. OSU is asking for $593,478, interest, and reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs. Wickline responded to OSU’s lawsuit with a lawsuit of his own against OSU and Cowboys athletic director Mike Holder for not fully releasing him from his contract.

NIU Athletics has reached a renewal agreement with Licensing Resource Group (LRG) to manage its trademark licensing opportunities for the next three years, Athletics Director Sean T. Frazier announced. Marshall University’s athletic department operated at a deficit of $749,800 in the 2012-13 budget year, according to a state legislative report released on Tuesday. According to the report, Marshall’s athletic department last saw a deficit in 2010 when the athletics program finished $2.6 million in the red. Hall stepped away from the day-to-day leadership of the program on Sept. 9 due to health concerns, and now will focus completely on his well-being. He compiled a 6-16 record in his first two seasons. Athletics Director Andy Carter said assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Kevin Turco, who has been overseeing the leadership responsibilities of the program in Hall’s absence, will continue in that capacity until a permanent head coach is selected.

WVU and Virginia Tech have come to a mutual agreement in which the two schools will play each other in common varsity sports when schedules permit over the next several years, starting in 2014-15. The series will be called the Black Diamond Challenge, a tribute to the region’s history in the coal industry. WVU and Tech will not sign a contract, preferring instead just to make a strong commitment to work with each other to schedule as many of these non-conference games as possible.

According to Thomas Wylie, Sports Director at KRTV in Great Falls, Gary Ehnes is resigning as athletics director at UGF. Ehnes is in his fourth year as AD. Under his guidance, the athletic department has experienced tremendous growth and success. It has added men’s and women’s rodeo, and men’s lacrosse. Ehnes oversees a total of 17 men’s and women’s athletic programs. Argo athletic teams have had much success, both athletically and academically. In the 2013-14 academic year, 14 different Argonaut athletic teams earned NAIA “Scholar-Team” recognition.

Warren “Moose” Koegel announced today he will retire Dec. 31 as Jacksonville State’s athletics director. Koegel was hired June 1, 2011, and during his time at JSU, the athletics program has won 11 Ohio Valley Conference championships. In addition, he oversaw facilities upgrades. More than eight months after UNC retained former federal prosecutor Kenneth Wainstein to conduct an independent investigation into academic fraud, the school announced that the Wainstein’s report would be released tomorrow. The event raised more than $100,000 for the men’s basketball program to be used on charter flights. KSU kicked off its homecoming activities Saturday with the dedication of the David and Peggy Edmonds Baseball and Softball Training Facility. The facility upgrade is part of the Building Champions initiative, which will generate money from private donors to fund a $25 million dollar investment in athletic scholarships and a $35 million dollar investment in various enhancement projects.

MVSU has received a $900,000 grant to build an academic support program for athletes. The grant came from the NCAA Accelerating Academic Success program. Funding will be provided over three years. Plans are for an enhanced computer lab with a new tutorial lab. Academic counselors will advise students on their course load and help them understand what courses to take in order to make progress in their majors. GW has $400 million left to raise in its largest-ever campaign, $1 billion, just three months after the effort publicly launched. GW has brought in $605 million since starting to build up the campaign three years ago, making it “substantially more than halfway to its goal,” President Steven Knapp announced Friday. The public got it’s first look at the new vision for Sea Gull Stadium on Saturday morning as Salisbury University unveiled the designs of its new $19 million showpiece along with $10 million in planned renovations to the athletic fields and other facilities at the athletics complex. The new building will be a considerable upgrade over the 1980 one-story cinder-block structure and press box on poles, which still remain on the now visitor’s side of the field. Funding will not come from state dollars.

Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett was taken to the hospital on Saturday before the Seminioles game against Notre Dame and did not coach the game. University of Cincinnati athletic director Mike Bohn announced leadership appointments Friday of senior staffers Omar Banks and Karen Hatcher to oversee the Bearcats’ internal and external affairs units, respectively. Banks will serve as Executive Senior Associate AD for Internal Affairs/Chief Financial Officer, while Hatcher was named the Executive Senior Associate AD for External Affairs. Banks joined the department in 2009, Hatcher in 2012.

Sources tell College AD that Roy Shick is heading to the University of Texas as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development. Shick is currently the Associate Athletics Director for Advancement at the University of Washington. Shick has been with Washington since 2008, having originally been Assistant Athletics Director for Major gifts. Within a couple of months of being hired, he received a promotion to his most recent position.

Senior Associate Athletics Director Andrew T. Goodrich has named Adam Schemm the new Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing. Schemm will begin his new role with the Bulls on Oct. 29 after serving a similar role at the University of Rhode Island for the past five years. Schemm also will take the helm of the Muma College of Business MBA Sports and Entertainment Management graduate assistant partnership and serve as a member of USF Athletics’ external leadership staff.

The Mountain West Conference and Learfield Sports today announced that Sports Authority, one of the largest full-line sporting goods retailers in the United States and Puerto Rico, will serve as title sponsor for the 2014 Sports Authority Mountain West Football Championship on Saturday, Dec. 6. The family of the late Bill W. Nelson and Rotary Corporation have made a major gift to the Athletic Foundation. The generosity of the Nelson Family will fund the Hall of Fame in the new Ted Smith Family Football Center. It will be named the Bill W. Nelson Hall of Fame. In addition, Rotary Corporation has funded the “Field of Dreams” between the stadium’s east end zone and the football center. The field provides a game day experience for children 12 and under.

NIU Athletics has announced a partnership with IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions, NIU Athletics Director Sean T. Frazier announced yesterday. Under the multi-year agreement, IMGLTS will sell NIU football, men’s and women’s basketball, and volleyball tickets. Johnathan Jick, one of IMGLTS’ top performers in his time with the company at NIU, will manage their onsite office. They will work in conjunction with NIU’s existing ticket staff to help sell any open inventory and increase attendance at all venues.

LSU and Texas will meet in a regular season football game for the first time since 1954 in 2019. The Tigers will play the Longhorns in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 7, 2019. “These are three very attractive games against two of the traditional powers in college football,” LSU Athletics Director Joe Alleva said. “These are the types of games that our fans want to see, and they will be a huge benefit to our football program and our university.”

MCC announces the hiring of former Mesa and Southern Mississippi assistant coach Grady Moorhead as the new head softball coach. Moorhead replaces Wayne Hill who coached the past three years. Moorhead was assistant coach at Southern Mississippi for three years. He assisted at Mesa from 2009-11. In 2010 they went 42-22. While at MCC he was the assistant hitting and offensive coach, catching coach and assistant recruiting coordinator among numerous duties.

Dartmouth softball head coach Shannon Doepking has named Bianca Mejia an assistant coach for the 2015 season. A former National Pro Fastpitch Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Mejia spent the past season at Bryant University. In 2014, Mejia helped guide the Bulldogs to their first NEC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance en route to being named the NEC Coaching Staff of the Year. The 32 wins in 2014 mark a Division I program record.

The University of Miami Athletics Department announced today that the Hurricane Club has officially surpassed $100 million dollars in philanthropic giving as part of the institution-wide Momentum2 (M2) Campaign. Since starting the M2 campaign in 2008, Miami has already eclipsed its previous fundraising total from the first Momentum campaign in just under six years. The original Momentum campaign spanned from 2000-2007 in which athletics raised $83 million. Launched in 2008, the M2 Campaign has an overall goal of raising $1.6 billion in philanthropic support University-wide.

Cornell University provost W. Kent Fuchs, who wasn’t even a candidate until Friday, was chosen to become the 12th president. He expects to begin his new job in January, pending approval by the state Board of Governors in November. UF president Bernie Machen is retiring in December.
