When current Director of Athletics Bill Moos ended his three-year hiatus from collegiate athletics and returned home to Pullman in 2010, it was undoubtedly the best thing to happen to the WSU athletic department. Enter Moos, the man who raised the athletics budget for the University of Oregon from $18.5 million to $40 million from 1995-2007 as the school’s athletic director. We don’t need to beat around the bush of all the luxuries and accomplishments the Duck’s athletic teams have had in the past 20 years due to the teamwork of Moos, former university President Pat Kilkenny and mega-booster Phil Knight. Rather, let’s take a look at the direction WSU athletics has already begun to head in these past five years. Perhaps we’ll start with that 10-year marketing agreement with Nike and $3 billion television deal with Fox and ESPN, both of which Moos signed. Did I mention too that he is also the Head Dean of Pac-12 Athletic Directors? The unveiling of an 11,610 feet football complex overlooking Martin Stadium in 2014, refurnishing of Bohler Gym in 2000, breaking ground to add permanent seating to Lower Soccer Field for this fall and the rumors swirling around that Bayley-Brayton Field could see its grandstands renovated soon are truly a wonderful boost to not only athletes but also students and alumni. Yet Moos’s work leveling the playing field for WSU in its facility upgrades will not be his greatest maneuver in potentially placing Cougar athletics on the same pedestal of the likes of UO, USC and UW. -Braden Johnson, The Daily Evergreen, Read More
