The ACC Is Taking Steps To Rebrand The Conference

The ACC has hired, New York City branding agency SME to work on a new identity and positioning for the conference. With recent additions like Syracuse, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Pittsburgh, the Atlantic Coast Conference is now spread over 1,500 miles from University of Miami to Boston College.

Given the breadth and demographics of the new ACC, now is as good a time as any to re-brand the conference.
“Our thought was that if we don’t do this now, when would we do it?” said Tim Lynde, the ACC’s senior associate commissioner for brand marketing.

According to Terry Lefton of the Sports Business Journal, the assignment is to interview more than 150 constituents, including ACC school presidents, athletic directors, student athletes, fans, faculty members and business partners, and produce a positioning paper by the end of the first quarter of 2014.

SME has recently helped the Sun Belt Conference, The Big Sky Conference, and The American East Conference in their re-branding efforts.

In the ever-changing landscape of college athletics, creating a strong brand image is as important as ever. SME recently interviewed ESPN Senior Vice President of College Sports Programming Burke Magnus on the collegiate sports landscape. Magnus has been one of the most influential decision-makers in the collegiate sports landscape as conferences and teams vie for valuable broadcast time.
