An anonymous $1 million gift to Furman’s football program honors the late John Bagwell, a former Paladins star who played at Summerville High School and coached at Fort Dorchester. Bagwell, who died in a car accident in 2003, was an all-Southern Conference running back at Furman, helping the Paladins to the 1988 Division I-AA national championship. He played for legendary coach John McKissick at Summerville, and was the first football coach at Fort Dorchester, where the stadium is named for him and his father, Howard Bagwell. – Jeff Hartsell, Post and Courier.
