  • December 11th, 2014— The Director of Athletics position is now open at Simpson University. Apply here. The position will be open until it is filled.

(JC) Lehigh Carbon Community College

  • December 10th, 2014— Sources tell College AD that Lehigh Carbon Community College athletic director Jocelyn Beck resigned her position, effective immediately. Marge Beahm has been named interim AD. Beahm had been the school’s head women’s basketball coach for six seasons before resigning in May. We will keep you updated as you hear more.

(D1) Southern Illinois University Carbondale

  • December 10th, 2014— SIU’s next permanent athletic director will inherit solid coaches and some of the best facilities in the country, but could face big financial challenges. Mario Moccia, the Salukis’ outgoing athletic director, said his permanent successor will likely need to continue what he has started to battle those challenges. Dr. Harold Bardo, the new interim athletic director, is scheduled to take over Jan. 1st. President Randy Dunn said he prefers not to use a search firm to hire Moccia’s permanent replacement, but will leave it up to the SIU Board of Trustees. -Todd Hefferman, The Southern-

(D1) Portland State University

  • December 9th, 2014— Portland State University will have two on-campus interviews with candidates for the open Director of Athletics position this week. The second candidate will be Mark Rountree, who will be on campus Wednesday. The campus community will have an opportunity to meet both candidates during an open forum each day they are on campus. Members of the campus community will also be allowed to provide feedback on each candidate. Rountree is currently the Deputy Athletics Director at Miami University of Ohio, a Mid-American Conference school.

(D1) Portland State University

  • December 8th, 2014— Portland State University will have two on-campus interviews with candidates for the open Director of Athletics position this week. The first candidate will be James Sarra, who will be on campus tomorrow. Information on the second candidate will be released tomorrow morning with that candidate on campus on Wednesday.

(D2) Saint Michael’s College

  • December 8th, 2014— Athletics Director Geri Knortz announced that 2014-15 will be her final academic year in the position, and that she will retire at the conclusion of her 18th year with the College on June 30, 2015. A search for Knortz’s successor will begin within the next few months. Knortz spearheaded the formation of the current faculty affiliate program, set team grade-point average expectations, and supported the Purple Knight Academic Challenge Cup, which has helped the Saint Michael’s student-athletes’ overall GPA reach 3.0.

  • December 8th, 2014— The Athletics Director position is open at MCLA. Apply here by January 5th.

  • December 8th, 2014— University of Massachusetts athletic director John McCutcheon is a finalist for a similar position at UC Santa Barbara. McCutcheon, one of six finalists being considered for the position, has already interviewed for the job. It is unclear when McCutcheon interviewed and which side initiated contact. The job McCutcheon and others are vying for is the vacated position of former UCSB AD Mark Massari, who stepped down in July after six years as AD to take the same position at Oregon State. Other finalists for the UCSB job include Saint Mary’s AD Mark Orr, Indiana State AD Ron Prettyman, Idaho AD Rob Spear, Santa Clara AD Dan Coonan and the school’s own senior associate athletic director, Andy Fee. -Daniel Malone, MassLive-

(D1) Southern Illinois University, Carbondale

  • December 8th, 2014— Harold Bardo, who recently retired as director of the SIU Carbondale Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Program and served as faculty representative to the university’s athletic program for 15 years, will serve as interim athletics director effective Jan. 1. This will be the second time Bardo has served in the interim role. He was interim AD in 1999 and 2000 prior to the appointment of Paul Kowalczyk. Bardo will serve in the role during the search for a replacement for Mario Moccia, who has accepted the AD position at New Mexico State University beginning in January. The search for a permanent director will begin shortly after the new year.

  • December 5th, 2014— Athletics Director Pat Haden on rumors regarding a resignation: I hear from friends that there are rumors about me stepping away from this job, but that is not in my plans at this time. I am fully engaged in this job and love working with our great staff, coaches and student-athletes here. We have a lot of work to do in the future. Yes, I am getting older, but my health is fine.   • December 5th, 2014— Clyde Doughty, Jr. has been named the new athletics director at Bowie State University, beginning Jan. 7, 2015. Doughty was director of intercollegiate athletics and managed the recreation and intramural programs at the Old Westbury campus of NYIT from 1988-2014. He served as the academic advisor to student athletes in 1982 and became the assistant director of athletics in 1984. A native of Queens, N.Y., Doughty first went to NYIT on a basketball scholarship in 1976 and enjoyed a playing career that included two appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, including the national championship game in 1980.

  • December 4th, 2014— Effective July 1, 2015, William (Bill) Gehling will step down as director of athletics to take on new responsibilities as senior advisor to University Advancement. Gehling has been part of the Tufts community for more than 40 years — as a student-athlete, coach and administrator. In 1979, he began a 20-year tenure as coach of the new women’s soccer program, guiding the Jumbos to the NCAA national quarterfinals in 1998, his final season. He was appointed athletics director in 1999. A search for the next AD is currently underway. The position is currently open and can be found here.

  • December 2nd, 2014— UAB Athletic Director Brian Mackin will step down from his post after 12 years to take a newly-created administrative position designed to aid student athletes affected by the discontinuation of programs. According to a release issued by the university today, Mackin will no long serve as athletic director and will be replace by Senior Associate Athletic Director Shannon Ealy on an interim basis.   • December 2nd, 2014— President Sonya Christian announced that Sandi Taylor has been selected as the college’s athletic director. Taylor has spent the past 15 months as the school’s interim athletic director, taking over for Ryan Beckwith in August 2013. (D1) UC Santa Barbara

  • November 30th, 2014— Sources tell College AD former Portland State Athletics Director Torre Chisholm has been in communication with UC Santa Barbara. Chisholm resigned from Portland State to “pursue other career opportunities”. Consequently enough, this past summer, UC Santa Barbara Athletic Director Mark Massari left to assume the Deputy Athletic Director position at Oregon State. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.

(D1) University of Michigan

  • November 29th, 2014— Michigan may have found its new athletic director, and if reports are true, he was already on campus. According to FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman, Michigan will remove the interim tag from current athletic director Jim Hackett and keep him on to man the position. A few days ago, Hackett said that he would evaluate head football coach Brady Hoke’s status with the school after the season, and admitted that this weekend’s game against Ohio State would play a major impact. -Dan Lyons-

  • November 28th, 2014— Joe Thompson, Luther College’s director of intercollegiate athletics and associate professor in Health and Physical Education, has announced he will retire at the end of the 2014-15 academic year after a 20-year career at the college. Thompson was named director of intercollegiate athletics at Luther College in June of 1995. He came to Luther following a successful 18-year coaching career that included stints as head track and field coach at University of St. Thomas, 1987-95, and UW-La Crosse, 1983-87.

  • November 28th, 2014— Columbia State’s Louis Conner will retire Dec. 31 after 26 years as basketball coach and athletic director, the community college announced recently. Conner, 64, was Columbia State’s basketball coach for 17 years before being named athletic director in 2005. Softball Coach Johnny Littrell, 58, will become interim athletic director. – The Daily Herald-

  • November 26th, 2014— Head football coach Nigel Burton was dismissed earlier today from his position. Oregon Live says the new Athletics Director will make the hire. However, College AD’s sources say that the university is not close to naming its next Athletics Director. The whole process could take some time before a new head football coach is named. The Vikings went 21-36 during head football coach Nigel Burton’s five years on the job, including a 3-9 record this season. Burton replaced Jerry Glanville as PSU head coach in 2009. Prior to his arrival, Burton was the defensive coordinator at the University of Nevada.

  • November 26th, 2014— There’s a growing sentiment that current interim athletic director Jim Hackett will stay on as Michigan’s athletic director for the foreseeable future. He met with the media last Saturday before Michigan’s game against Maryland and laid out some of his plans for the future in reference to the football program. Hackett did not lay out a timetable regarding the future of Brady Hoke, but the belief is that if Michigan does not qualify for a bowl game, they will make a decision shortly after the game on Saturday against Ohio State. -Steven Lorenz, Michigan Insider-

  • November 26th, 2014— Sources tell College AD that phone interviews for the AD position will be taking place next week. In total, eight to 10 individuals will be interviewed by phone, and three to four of those individuals will be brought to campus. The goal is the hire by December 19th for the new AD to start in January. We will keep you updated as we hear more.

  • November 25th, 2014— Sources tell College AD that Foothill College is conducting interviews in early December. Five to six candidates will be interviewing on the 3rd and 5th, and one to two of those names will have an interview with the president before Christmas. A hire will surface for January.

(JC) Owens CC

  • November 25th, 2014— Over 100 people were candidates for the Owens Community College AD position, which closed at the end of October with no selected candidate. The search started immediately after AD Rudy Yovich accepted the job of AD at Defiance College back in July. Here’s the list of names.

(D2) University of Hawaii, Hilo

  • November 25th, 2014— Former Vulcan Baseball Coach Joey Estrella will assume the position of interim athletic director at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo on January 1, 2015, and the search for a permanent athletic director will begin in early January. Estrella, who headed the Vulcan baseball program he founded for 37 years, brings extensive experience to the position. From 1980 to 1989 he served as both head baseball coach and athletic director. He also served as an assistant athletic director from 2009 until his retirement in 2013. Estrella will replace Tim Moore, whose appointment as interim athletic director ends on December 31, 2014. -Alyson Kakugawa-Leong-

  • November 24th, 2014— Sources tell College AD that Colby College AD search is ongoing. The first round of interviews will occur on December 1/2. No invites have been extended as of yet. The position has been open since late October. We will keep you updated as we hear more.

(NAIA) Life University

  • November 24th, 2014— For the second time in four months, Life University introduced a new athletic director, turning to the man behind the university’s renowned rugby program. Dan Payne, director of rugby since 2009 was promoted to the athletic director role earlier this week. Payne replaces Bill Firnbach, who succeeded John Barrett as athletic director in August, with Barrett retaining his role as men’s basketball coach. Firnbach, however, ultimately declined to stay in the AD position, according to a university spokesman, and will remain an assistant to Barrett with the basketball team. Payne’s latest promotion will necessitate taking a reduced role with the Life rugby program.

  • November 24th, 2014— The Athletics Director search had concluded recently with the naming of Jim Bartko as Athletics Director. However, we have learned much more about the process behind-the-scenes, and we know who were actually in it. Here are the final details and the full list of the candidates.

(D1) University of Michigan

  • November 21st, 2014— Jim Hackett’s appointment as Michigan interim athletic director was approved during Thursday’s University of Michigan Regents meeting. The athletic department request for a $5.8 million upgrade of the Yost ice rink floor and refrigeration system also was approved. Funding for the project will come from athletic department resources, and construction is expected to be completed by next summer. -Angelique Chengelis, The Detroit News-

  • November 20th, 2014— College AD has learned this morning from sources close to the search that Stephen Ponder, Senior Executive Associate AD for External Relations at the University of Mississippi is no longer in contention for the athletics director position at Fresno State. We will keep you updated as we continue to call and follow up on candidates.

  • November 19th, 2014— After extensive research today, College AD has learned from Multiple sources that Dr. Renee Baumgartner, Deputy Athletic Director at Syracuse University is no longer in the mix for the Athletics Director position at Fresno State. Of the four candidates mentioned in our article this morning, we are told there were two more names that made the final six candidates for the position. We will keep you updated as we hear more.

  • November 19th, 2014— Sources tell College AD that Fresno State is extremely close to naming its next Athletics Director. We are also told when the decision could come about at the earliest. Five candidates are in the running, and the final name could be one of these five or could be someone outside of the list. Here are the candidates so far.

(D2) Drury University

  • November 19th, 2014— Drury has selected Mark Fisher as its next Athletics Director, effective July 1st. Fisher is currently the Athletics Director for Springfield Public Schools, where he has been AD since 2003. Beginning Jan. 5, 2015, former DU athletic director Edsel Matthews will return to campus to serve as interim AD until Fisher’s full-time arrival in July. Scott Puryear, associate AD for marketing and communications, has served as the interim AD for the past five months.

  • November 19th, 2014— University of Michigan president Mark Schlissel intends to make the position of interim Athletic Director Jim Hackett official. “I am pleased to recommend the appointment of James Hackett as interim director of intercollegiate athletics…” wrote Schlisser in a letter to the university’s Board of Regents.   • November 18th, 2014— IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll has appointed Steve Roach to serve as the interim athletic director upon Dr. Frank Condino’s retirement on Jan. 9, 2015. Roach will begin his appointment on Jan. 10th. A search for an AD will begin in the coming year. Roach, who is in his second full year as the associate athletics director, is a 2001 alumnus of IUP. He came to IUP in February 2013 after spending more than five years in the same capacity at Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

  • November 17th, 2014— With the departure of NMSU athletics director McKinley Boston at the end of the year, a field of 48 applicants is now down to current Southern Illinois AD Mario Moccia, current Indiana State AD Ron Prettyman, current University of Nevada deputy AD Rory Hickok and former UNLV deputy AD Gerard Koloski.   • November 14th, 2014— When Franklin Pierce Director of Athletics Bruce Kirsh ’71 announced his retirement this past summer, more than a few people on campus wondered how the University would replace such a valuable person. Kirsh has spent more than 40 years at the University building Franklin Pierce’s Department of Athletics into one of the strongest Division II sports programs in the country. But Franklin Pierce won’t need to replace Kirsh after all, as the University announced today that Kirsh will stay on as director of athletics.

(D1) Colorado State University

  • November 13th, 2014— Sources tell us that the Colorado State Athletics Director Search has begun reaching out to candidates to gauge their interest. The firm being used for the search is DHR International, having been announced in August. This is an initial reach out to people nationwide based on interest and fit for the position.

(D2) California State University Dominguez Hills

  • November 13th, 2014— With over 35 years of intercollegiate administrative and coaching experience including 11 years as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics at Cal State Fulleton, Cal State Dominguez Hills has named Dr. Maryalyce Jeremiah its Interim Director of Athletics, it was announced by the University. The position opened in August.

(D2) Georgia Southwestern State University

  • November 13th, 2014— GSW has named head coach of the Hurricanes basketball team Mike Leeder to the position of athletic director. Leeder entered his ninth year as the men’s head basketball coach at GSW during the 2014-15 season. In Early May, Leeder was announced as the interim to replace Jaclyn Donovan who resigned in December. The original plan was for the national search to reopen in a year. Leader replaced interim AD Randolph Barksdale on June 1st. -Americus Times Recorder-

  • November 13th, 2014— Lane College has announced the resignation of the school’s interim athletic director and interim head football coach. Interim Athletic Director Penny Minter and Interim Head Football Coach Malik Hoskins both resigned their positions Monday effective immediately. Lane President Logan Hampton accepted the resignations and appointed Roger Ogden, Lane’s sports information director and head softball coach, as the athletic director on an interim basis. The college will conduct a national search for athletic director and head football coach. -WBBJ News-

  • November 13th, 2014— The day after we reported the news, ACU announced today the hiring of Lee DeLeon as the new Athletics Director. DeLeon is currently in his fourth year at the University of New Mexico as the Associate Athletic Director for Development and Executive Director of the Lobo Club. The AD search at Abilene Christian has been going on since August, when Jared Mosley announced his resignation to become the new CEO and president of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco. Last month, Cory Driskill assumed the interim role.

  • November 13th, 2014— Almost a year ago, in November 2013, Athletics Director Dexter Irvin left for similar post at the College of Southern Nevada. A couple of months later, in January, Tim Moore took over as interim Athletics Director. Since then, no word has floated around about a permanent replacement. Sources tell College AD that there is currently no search being initiated, nor has there been a search at all this year. We can expect that Tim will retain his post for quite some time.

  • November 12th, 2014— Less than 24 hours after we came out with the first unofficial announcement, the news is now official! Steve Watson will be the new Athletics Director at LUC. Watson comes from St. Bonaventure, where he was the AD since 2006.

  • November 12th, 2014— Now in his second year as Boston College’s athletic director, Brad Bates is one of the most established athletic department figures in the nation. With his professional resume combined with his background as a walk-on football player at Michigan under Bo Schembechler, it’s inevitable many would speculate he could be a candidate for U-M’s open athletic director position. Bates, on the speculation, says “It really doesn’t distract me at all. I love it here at Boston College, my values align with the institutional mission and we’ve really enjoyed living in New England.” When asked if he knows if UM has been contacting candidates or has even contacted him, he elected not to directly comment. -Matt Sheehan, Times Herald-

  • November 11th, 2014— President Mark Schlissel is concerned about the role of academics in the athletic programs, so he’s carefully assessing candidates to replace athletic director Dave Brandon, who resigned last month. “That’s why I’m taking a bit of time with the search for Dave’s successor,” Schlissel told the school’s the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs on Monday.”I want to take the time to make sure we get someone who is not only technically adept but can ensure that the program has financial and academic integrity — and also someone who shares the value system of realizing our mission.

  • November 11th, 2014— UTPB athletics director and head volleyball coach Dr. Steve Aicinena has announced he is stepping down after 21 seasons of coaching UTPB volleyball. He will continue in his current roles as athletics director and professor. Aicinena ends his time at UTPB as the program’s only head coach with a career mark of 337-321. A two-time conference coach of the year, his teams won two conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

  • November 11th, 2014— Athletics Director David Rigsby has accepted a position across campus as Associate VP for Advancement. He will continue to work closely with coaches and staff on a successful transition until his successor arrives on campus. Rigsby ’00 was in his fourth year as AD. He previously served Willamette in a variety of positions, including assistant dean, interim director of career services, associate dean of campus life and interim co-dean of campus life. Willamette will soon launch a national search to hire the next director of athletics.

  • November 10th, 2014— John Leister announced his resignation as Director of Athletics at Alma College at 11 a.m. on Monday morning. The long-time administrator was named Director of Athletics in 2007 and had coached at Alma College on both the football and baseball teams dating back to 1993.
